When I was a child – someone messed up and told me that I could do anything that I wanted to do, and that I could be anything that I wanted to be – and I believed them.
I was in the first grade and I had to memorize and deliver the MLK speech (partially) – most of my confidence (like most kids) relied on my parents presence – well…neither one of them for one reason or another showed up to hear me deliver the speech. I had studied that speech with great discipline and i was very nervous about speaking. The night of the speech, as I panned the room and looked for a familiar face, or some sort of support…I found that there was none…my teacher pulled me to the side and wiped the tears from my eyes and said “kenny, you can do whatever it is in life that you want to do, and you can be whatever it is you want to be…and right now i need you to be a brave boy”…I never forgot her words – I believed her and went out and delivered the speech with great confidence.
Today – I have achieved things that little project kids like myself are not supposed to be achieve – next year I will be a commissioned officer in the US Navy (first in the family) – and one day…because i truly believe i can be…I will be the Mayor of mid-sized city.
